Will.i.am Offers Snippet Of New Britney Spears Song“The Big Fat Bass”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Britney SpearsThe latest song clip to be teased from Britney Spears’ upcoming albumFemme Fatale(out March 29) is“The Big Fat Bass,” a collaboration with Black Eyed Peas music guru will.i.am. A snippet of the minimal, bass-heavy electro jam was posted online by Will this morning. Give it a listen below.

Last week we saw a photo of Brit in the studio with will.i.am, and now we get to hear what he describes as being the intro to one of their musical collaborations.“thank you britney for collaborating it was a pleasure working with you,” he wrote onDipdive.“thank you for trusting my instincts…you’re a doll…i look forward on working with you again…its an honor because you rarely do collaboration…im your second…”

Hmmm. As we know, Britney also partnered up with Madonna for“Me Against The Music.” But how quickly Will forgets the“Hold It Against Me” singer’s duet with Don Phillips,“I Will Still Love You,” from her very first album!

Anyway, we’re loving that early’90s house piano intro to this clip. And the rest is certainly big, fat and bass-y. But like the recent teases of“Inside Out,”“I Wanna Go”and“How I Roll,”there’s not a whole lot to go off of here (other than the fact that Spears sounds eerily like Fergie).

Guess that’s Britney for you—always such a tease.

M.I.A. Has The Right Stuff On Lost Track“Zig Zag”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

mia-oslo-1When it comes to getting from Point A (obscurity) to Point B (critical and commercial success), M.I.A. sure isn’t traveling in a straight line. (Scream Awards, anyone?) Thus it’s only fitting that the lost track fromMAYAthat recently resurfaced is called“Zig Zag.” Surprisingly, it’s a relatively straightforward, catchy tune from an artist whose antics are oftenanything but— she even borrows the “Oh oh oh-oh-oh”s from New Kids On The Block’s legendary “You’ve Got It (The Right Stuff)!” Take a listen below.

M.I.A. - Zig Zag

“Kiss me and I’ll kiss you back / You zig me and I’ll zag you back,”M.I.A. sings on the bouncy, chipper track. The electronic production, of course, fits right in with the rest ofMAYA, but the song is a little more melodic than many of that album’s offerings. And, dare we say, a little more mainstream, too — particularly the homage to Donnie, Danny, Joey, Jordan, and Jonathan. The sing-songy chorus is slightly reminiscent of“Paper Planes,”the track that put theoft-unfashionableSri Lankan on the mainstream map in the first place (temporarily, at least).

Of course, M.I.A. still retains some of her trademark controversial flair here thanks to lyrics like:“Thanks to my mom and daddy / Hot-spicy like their curry / Over there, toilet that way”— a grateful parental shout-out even tackier thanChristina Aguilera’s. So it isn’t exactly a Selena Gomez track, either.

If we were better acquainted with theVikki Leekx mixologist, we’d have advised her not to axe this track. Then again, if we were better acquainted with M.I.A., we’d probably have awhole laundry list of thingswe’d advise her to do differently.

Is This Britney Spears On The Demo For“Black Widow”? | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

britney_spears-blackB-159239Enough of these10-second snippets- we want to hear another full-length Britney Spears song fromFemme Fatale! Well, we (sort of) get our wish with“Black Widow”, allegedly a demo of Britney’s off her upcoming album, though many are saying it’s actually electro-pop singer Myah Marie’s vocals. Listen below and tell us if this is Brit or not.

“Black Widow”

We could see ourselves Dance Dance Revolutioning to this song.

No dubstep, no Euro influences, no dark subject matter– this song is pure, pretty, happy-go-lucky, rainbow-shining, fist-pumping, bubblegum pop. It’s the Britney we love best. Though we must admit, the vibe of the song doesn’t much match“Hold It Against Me”, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this a) wasn’t actually her song, or b) didn’t make the cut ofFemme Fatale.

What do you guys think? Brit or no?

“Things Get Worse”For Eminem And B.o.B On New Track | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

esq-09-eminem-grammys-2011-021411-lgEminem and B.o.B scored a hit with their Grammy-nominated track“Airplanes (Part II)”, but that apparently wasn’t the only existing collaboration between the two rappers. A previously unreleased jam featuring both MCs on the mic,“Things Get Worse”, popped up on the interwebs today, hearkening back a time when themember of the YouTube Billionaires Clubhappily doled out pop culture references and threats against family members. Ah, those were the days. Listen below.

Eminem feat. B.o.B - Things Get Worse

“Note to Jessica Simpson, let’s go with the tuna casserole / Cause I used to love her hooters, now Carmen Electra’s cuter/ Strap an extension cord to her arm and electrocute her,” raps Em.“I’m off my fucking meds but I’m on an electric scooter/ I might just scoot by and shoot my mom in the neck with Rugers / Spit in Jason’s face while I vomit on Freddy Krueger / They can’t even get Jeffrey Dahmer to pet the cougar.”

“There’s no need to say shit you already know, the question is just how far will this go,” adds B.o.B on the chorus.“‘Cause I will never lay down and I will never let up.”

Sounds like an fairly old Slim Shady track, as indicated by Em’s more playful cadence when discussing violent acts, as well as pretty dated references to Jessica Simpson and Carman Electra. (Sorry, ladies, but no one’s really bothering to rap about you anymore.) Of course, this could have been recorded during hisRecoverysessions, but didn’t fit the tone of the rest of the album and they decided to (wisely) leave it out.

What do you think of this track? Is it a winner, or should it have stayed buried?

Britney Spears Wants Released In Snippet Of New Song“I Wanna Go”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Britney SpearsGiven that Britney Spears’ newly-released“Hold It Against Me”video depicts theFemme Fatalesinger as a celebrity who is forever surrounded by the media, the snippet of her new song“I Wanna Go” that producer Dr. Luke tweeted out last night takes on eerie significance. Listen below.

“Release, release, control of me, I wanna go all the way,” a heavily-Auto-Tuned Brit chirps over a chugging bed of dance-pop bass. Luketweetedthat the song was produced by Max Martin and Shellback, who previously paired up to twiddle the knobs on Spears’“3″ and“If U Seek Amy.”

Hmmm. Britney as a caged pop bird?

This short clip of“I Wanna Go” follows the one for“Inside Out”that Dr. Luke posted over the weekend.

It’s a long way to March 29, the dayFemme Fataleis released. Guess we can expect plenty of abbreviated soundbites of Britney tunes till then (a la the 14sometimes-frustrating teasersleading up to the“Hold It Against Me”video premiere)? At the very least it would be nice to get another full single ahead of that date.

And, P.S.: is Britneyevergoing to do an interview to promote her new music?

Listen To Patrick Stump’s“Porcelain”From His‘Truant Wave’EP | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Patrick_Stump2Patrick Stump’sTruant WaveEP drops today, giving us a 6-song preview of the vibe we can expect to glean from his full-length solo album, due this summer. So, is it Fall Out Boy-esque, or is it the complete opposite? Well, as far as we can tell after one straight-through listen, it’s both. Check out one of the EP’s opening track,“Porcelain”, below.

The boys of FOB were never scared off from experimenting with other genres— there were plenty of R&B, pop, hip-hop and soul influences across all their albums. In that respect, Stump’s still doing what he’s always done—Truant Wavefeels like a playlist of various styles and musical genres squeezed together, from the Michael Jackson soul-pop on“Cute Girls” to the dance-pop of“Love, Selfish, Love.”

If there’s any first-listen comparison we can gather from Stump’s time in his pop-punk-rock band to his debut as a solo artist, it’s that he’s able to slow it down a lot and take his time. Not that his songs lack energy— he’s just performing at a less frenetic, maniacal pace than that of FOB. Basically, we don’t expect to see any mosh pits forming at any of his upcoming sold-out shows in New York and Chicago.

Thea cappella-endorsingartist choseour preferred version of“Spotlight (Oh, Nostalgia)”forTruant Wave(does that mean“No Regrets” will be on the full-length album?), but the song that has us the most interested is a track called“Porcelain”, in which Stump sings about never wanting to meet his idols for fear of finding out they’re, ya know, actually human, with flaws and imperfections. Or maybe it’s written from the point of view of one of his fans? Listen to it below.

Patrick Stump feat. Alph-a-bit - Porcelain

“I don’t ever want to meet you, because you’re like Porcelain / And I think it would it would crack if I found out you were a brat / Stay perfect,” sings P-Stump.

“Have you ever met somebody who was perfect til you met them? I have.” We’re dying to know who he’s talking about. Any guesses, folks?

Truant Waveis available for download on iTunes, or stream the whole EP over on Patrick’sFacebook page.

Jessie J Is No“Casualty Of Love”In Her New Single | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

2wr3u3t
Fans who know Jessie J by her playful“Price Tag”or the rambunctious“Do It Like A Dude”can now add a slow-jam piano ditty to their mental catalog of the UK songbird’s tunes. Thepublic transportation patronhas let loose her next U.S. single“Casualty of Love,” an R&B number about inner strength that showcases both Jessie J’s powerhouse vocals and songwriting abilities. Head below to check out the softer, more heartbroken side of theblack-lipstick-lovingdiva.

We have nothing bad to say about this lovely little track, which sounds like something Jennifer Hudson might belt over the closing credits of a Nicholas Sparks movie. In other words, while we admire the craftsmanship of both the songwriting and singing, we’re afraid this may be too tepid to make much of a splash as a single.

So far, the tracks we’ve heard from Jessie J are all wildly different in terms of sound and message, which makes us wonder which variation is going to click best with stateside listeners as we await the U.S. release ofWho You Are.

What do you think? Is“Casualty of Love” up to snuff with Jessie J’s other singles? Or did you prefer another incarnation of this sonic chameleon?

Lil Wayne Sweetens Up Mike Posner’s“Bow Chicka Wow Wow”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

mike-posner-lil-wayneMike Posner, the dudeyou are allegedly cooler than, is releasing his love-and-lust-fueled melody“Bow Chicka Wow Wow”as the third official single from his debut album,31 Minutes To Takeoff. This tweaked version is pretty much the original track upgraded with a slow-and-syrupy Lil Wayne verse near the end. The two artists are currently filming the video, so expect some well-tailored suits, slow camera fades and lots of ladies. Weezy remix below.

Mike Posner feat. Lil Wayne - Bow Chicka Wow Wow (Remix)

“The night was dead, we found live / I know I talk shit, but it sound right,” slowly raps Weezy on the tune.

For a song called“Bow Chicka Wow Wow”, this is surprisingly sweet all the way through. Thoughts?

Katy Perry Beams Kanye West Into Her“E.T.”Mix | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Katy Perry E.T. single art cover sleeveSomeone at Katy Perry’s label (or perhaps theunlucky-in-Grammy girlherself) apparently felt it necessary to tack a couple raps by Kanye West onto the singer’sfourthTeenage Dreamsingle“E.T.” As we saw yesterday, the Platinum-selling pairhave been busy shootingthe intergalacticMax Martin/Dr. Luke-produced jam’s music video. Now hear the souped-up version of“E.T.” with Kanye West in the mix below.

“I got a dirty mind, I got filthy ways / I’m trying to bathe my egg in your milky way,” sleazy Kanye warns in the intro to“E.T.” Later in the song, he adds,“Tell me what’s next, alien sex? I’m-a disrobe you, then I’m-a probe you.”

Thanks for that, Kanye. We’ll be over there barfing in our space suits.

Katy Perry feat. Kanye West - E.T.

So far Perry has landed her first three singles off her latest album—”California Gurls,”“Teenage Dream” and“Firework”—at the top of theBillboardHot 100. So it’s somewhat confusing why anyone felt it necessary to throw a rap onto what is sure to be her latest Top 10 single.

Ultimately, Kanye doesn’t really add anything here. And he’s certainly done far better.

Do you think“E.T.” needed a rap for its single mix?

Who Did“Love The Way You Lie”Better: Rihanna Or Skylar Grey? | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Skylar GreyYou knowEminem and Rihanna’s versionof“Love The Way You Lie.” And you know Rihanna’srendition where she takes lead vocals, from her albumLoud. Now prepare to hear songwriter Skylar Grey’s original demo for the Grammy-nominated tune.“I wrote the demo initially for myself because I thought,‘Oh, I have this big song, and now I have a little bit of a launching pad to put out my own stuff’,” Skylar, whose real name is Holly Hafferman, toldPopEater. Listen to the original version of the song below.

Grey continued:“As soon as Rihanna and her team heard my demo, they were like,‘Oh we want it for Rihanna’s album,’ so I had to make the decision if I was going to let them have it or not. But I did and so it was on Rihanna’s album, too.”

“Love The Way You Lie” is currentlynominated for a total of five Grammys, including Record and Song of the year, and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

Last month we talked to“Love The Way You Lie” producer Alex Da Kid, whohad this to say about Skylar:

“She’s signed to my production company and I’m just in the middle of negotiating a label situation through a major record company. We figure probably by January or February I’ll make it concrete and we’ll go from there. To me she’s an amazing artist. She plays like nine or ten instruments. Shewrites amazing songs. She’s the real deal.”

Obviously Eminem and Rihanna made“Love The Way You Lie” famous all over the world. Do you think Skylar, who also co-wrote Diddy-Dirty Money’s current hit“Coming Home,”should have kept the song for herself?

‘Glee’Gets Bieber Fever, Covers“Baby”And“Somebody To Love”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

glee-justin-bieber-episode-500x360We know that your Monday is already knee-deep in Justin Bieber thanks to thepremiere of his movie, the release of hisValentine’s Day remix album, and ourGrammys coverage(as well as therevoltled by his fans upon poor Best New Artist winner Esperanza Spalding). But the flow of the river Bieb is still rambling along: in tomorrow’s episode,“Comeback”, theGleecast performs two of thetweet-meister’s singles,“Baby” and“Somebody To Love”, in standard Bieber regalia:bright-c0lored hoodies and hair swoops. Also, Rachel and Mercedes duet on aRentnumber, and Puck’s new crush Lauren Zizes finally gets a chance to sing. Jump below to listen to tomorrow night’s tunes.

Glee Cast - Baby

Glee Cast - Somebody To Love

Glee Cast - Take Me Or Leave Me

Glee Cast - Sing

Glee Cast - I Know What Boys Like

We much preferred when the cast covered Queen’s“Somebody To Love”, but we honestly enjoyed Chord Overstreet’s acoustic cover of“Baby”– until the synths and overproduction kicked in, at least.

Lea and Amber show off their killer chops in“Take It Or Leave Me” fromRent, but it’s still up in the air whether Ashley Fink, who plays Lauren, can really sing, as The Waitresses’“I Know What Boys Like” contains more obnoxious sing-talking than a Ke$ha song.

We do find it a bit strange that My Chemical Romance, a band who has a song called“Vampire Money” about bands who sell out to be on theTwilightsoundtracks, would then allow one of their songs to be onGlee. Guess they won’t be writing a song called“Show Choir Money” anytime soon.

Lupe Fiasco Gets Serious With New Single“Words I Never Said”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

lupe-words-coverLupe Fiasco’s long-delayedLasersis finally due to drop March 8, and it appears that it will all be worth the wait. The album’s second single,“Words I Never Said”, features Skylar Grey on the hook, and was produced by epic-song-maestroAlex Da Kid. The thought-provoking song discusses some heavy subject matter as the war on terror and the economy, and offers some harsh critiques of both President Obama and Glenn Beck. Nothing like a pop song to get you horribly depressed about the state of our society! Listen below.

Lupe Fiasco feat. Skylar Grey–“Words I Never Said”

“It’s so loud inside my head with words that I should have said,” sings Skylar.“As I drown in my regrets, I can’t take back the words I never said.”

“Crooked banks around the world would gladly give a loan away / cause if you ever miss a payment they can take your home away,” sadly raps Lupe on the world-weary track.

Alex Da Kid certainly knows how to take depressing subject matter, put it to a uptempo beat, add a forlorn-sounding female singer on the hook, and make a giant hit. Just look at T.I.’s“Castle Walls”, B.o.B’s“Airplanes”and Eminem’s“Love The Way You Lie.”It’d be nice to see if he can stretch his producing muscle and give us something more fun than forlorn, but hey, if it ain’t broke! (And no, Nicki Minaj’s“Massive Attack” doesn’t count, cause we always frown when we hear it.)

What do you think of Lupe’s latest? Tell us in the comments.

Lady Gaga Discusses“Born This Way”, Leaves Out Any Mention Of Madonna | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

gaga-born-this-way-vidThedebate rages onwhether Lady Gaga intentionally lifted melodies from Madonna’s“Express Yourself” for her new lead single“Born This Way”, or if it was just divine intervention guiding Gaga through the songwriting process. Music aside, the Grammy nomineedoesgive us a bit of insight into the meaning of the song (as if we couldn’t figure it out from thelyrics) in two mysterious clips filmed in a dimly light room, allegedly on the set of the video for“Born This Way”. Jump below for some pretentious, vague explanations of what the song means!

“It’s about the way that we see the future,” says a monotone Gaga.“Right now we’re in a state of drifting, we’re not sure where we’re supposed to go or what we’re supposed to understand or replicate or imitate… we’re drifting in space towards the light. And‘Born This Way’ tells us that the light is within us and to follow yourself.”

She continues in the second video:“It was meant to be a song about revolution and freedom and lack of prejudice. And when I started to make the images for it, I thought of my fans… it is the monsters who created the imagery.”

Does that mean Gaga’s video for her single will look likethese little monsterswe found at her concert?

Travis Barker Remixes Kanye West& Jay-Z’s“H.A.M.”| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Travis BarkerDrum whizTravis Barker has been amping up his hip hop cred byrecording with Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Game and Swizz Beatz, and by joining the roster of Weezy’sI Am Music II tour. Now he’s gone and taken a stab at remixing Kanye West and Jay-Z’s angryWatch The Thronesingle“H.A.M.”Give the rocked-out version of the rap joint a listen below.

Admittedly, we weren’t that blown away by‘Ye N-word riddled tirade and Jay’s boasting on“H.A.M.” In fact, our first thought was that the best part of the song is the breakdown in the middle—i.e. the bit where the two of them aren’t rapping.

So how does Travis’ take on the song stack up?

Kanye West& Jay-Z - H.A.M. (Travis Barker Remix)

It’s an interesting mix, with the ominous guitars and, naturally, live drums sprinkled in here and there. But was it necessary?“H.A.M.” already stiffed in the charts (currently it’s the 135th most downloaded song on iTunes) and received mixed reviews. There’s probably a reason for that, Trav.

Personally, we think Barker should stick to hamming it up on his new material while prepping for his upcoming tour, and just let“H.A.M.” R.I.P.

For the second time in one week,Gleeis covering the King of Pop— on Sunday it was“Thriller”, and Artie takes on“P.Y.T.” in tonight’s Valentine’s Day-themed episode,“Silly Love Songs”. But MJ isn’t the only pop star doing double duty this week— after turning Katy Perry’s“California Gurls” into achoreographed fire hazard,Gleesalutes the teenage dream by performing a Xerox copy of“Firework.”Listen to tonight’s set list below.

Glee Cast - P.Y.T.

Glee Cast - Firework

Glee Cast - Fat Bottomed Girls

Glee Cast - When I Get You Alone

Glee Cast - Silly Love Songs

We still haven’t tired of the Warblers— Darren Criss-starring spinoff, please? — but the other three covers could not be any less imaginative in their copycat arrangement. Honestly, did they recreateanyof the instrumentation of“Firework”, or just add Lea’s vocals on top of the original track?

But let’s focus on the positive, shall we– at least Kevin McHale’s version of“P.Y.T.” is more than anrobotized novelty.

Feel the love tonight at 8 p.m. on Fox.

Brandy Gives Timbaland Some Extra Kick On“808″| Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Brandy NorwoodMCs picking a day of the week to chuck out free tunes via Twitter is becoming the norm, but today Timbland offered up a standout  jam for his“Timbaland Thursdays”in the form of the Brandy-featuring“808.” Granted, the formerDancing With The Starscontestantessentially doesn’t get to vocally show off until the end of the track—save for a loop of her intoning the song’s title throughout—but we’re digging the beat on this one. Listen below.

“And when the music’s gone and there’s no more songs, no more songs / And when the snare is gone and that hi-hat’s gone, I still got 808,” Timbaland sings on the boastful tune with his trademark layered vocals.

Later Brandy adds,“I’m like the bass in the trunk, if you want I can ride the wave / Baby just tell me where you’re at and I’m on my way.”

Timbaland feat. Brandy - 808

Overall,“808″ is a nice little jam that, if anything, proves Timbaland still knows his way around a good hook, and that Brandy is sorely missed on the radio.

“Yeah they talk, yeah they talk / they don’t walk the walk I walk,” raps Bieber.“I won’t stop, til I drop, until then I reach the top / I’m a walk to where I need to be, walk the path of destiny / Definitely been neglected but God is always testing me.”

‘Glee’Covers Destiny’s Child, Lady Antebellum& Zombies For The Super Bowl | Music News, Reviews, and Gossip on Idolator.com

Glee ArtworkYou’ve already heard theGleecast put their jazz hands all over Michael Jackson’s“Thriller”– but the zombified football number isn’t the only song on the show’s Super Bowl episode,“The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle”. The members of New Directions also perform Lady Antebellum’sGrammy-nominated“Need You Now” and The Zombies’“She’s Not There”, while the Warblers’ keep up their streak of turning female-voiced pop hits into a cappella triumphs with Destiny’s Child’s“Bills Bills Bills”. Listen to the episode’s set list below!

Glee Cast - Bills Bills Bills

Glee Cast - She's Not There

Glee Cast - Need You Now

Glee Cast - Thriller/Heads Will Roll

“Thriller/Heads Will Roll” continues to be the most rave-friendly song to come out ofGlee. And while the Warblers’ take on Beyonce& Co.’s 1999 hit single may be a bit more outdated than covering Katy Perry’s more current chart-topper, it’s still a fun, creatively arranged number.

However, is anyone else a little confused by a running zombie theme (”Thriller”,“Heads Will Roll”, covering a Zombies’ song) in February? Maybe Ryan Murphy is a fan of HBO’sThe Walking Dead?

“The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle” airs on February 6 on Fox after the Super Bowl.
